Mootv Odisha(Bhubaneswar)18/10: Meteorological authorities have issued an urgent alert as a severe cyclonic storm forms in the Bay of Bengal, raising concerns for coastal regions in India and Bangladesh. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the storm, named “Cyclone Megha,” could intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding to several states.

Storm Path and Impact

As of the latest reports, Cyclone Megha is currently located about 650 km southeast of the Odisha coast, moving in a north westerly direction. It is expected to make landfall between Odisha and West Bengal by the evening of October 20, with wind speeds projected to reach 120-140 km/h.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall, especially in the coastal districts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh. The storm surge accompanying the cyclone is likely to inundate low-lying areas, causing widespread flooding. Fishing operations in the Bay of Bengal have been suspended, and residents in vulnerable regions are being advised to evacuate.

Both state and central governments are coordinating efforts to mitigate the impact of the cyclone. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed multiple teams to high-risk areas, ready to assist with rescue and relief operations. Local authorities have been instructed to prepare shelters, stockpile essential supplies, and ensure the availability of medical aid.

Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner, Pradeep Jena, stated, “We are on high alert and have made extensive preparations to ensure minimal loss of life and property. Evacuation orders will be issued soon for residents in vulnerable areas.”

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to the public to remain calm and follow government advisories. “We are monitoring the situation closely, and all precautionary measures have been put in place,” she said during a press briefing.

Bangladesh on High Alert

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has also issued warnings as the storm is expected to affect the southwestern part of the country. Authorities in coastal districts such as Khulna and Barisal are preparing for possible evacuation orders. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the sea until further notice.

Air and Rail Disruptions Expected

Several airlines have announced potential disruptions to flights to and from Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam in anticipation of severe weather. Rail services across the eastern region could also face delays or cancellations.

Outlook

Cyclone Megha is expected to weaken gradually after making landfall but could still cause significant damage in its path. Residents are urged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and follow instructions from local authorities.

The IMD has emphasized the need for continuous monitoring as cyclonic systems in the Bay of Bengal are known for their unpredictable movements.

According to the latest reports from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Megha is expected to make landfall on the evening of October 20, 2024, along the eastern Indian coast. The projected landfall location is between northern Odisha and southern West Bengal, near the Balasore district in Odisha or the Digha region in West Bengal.

Authorities have warned that the cyclone could bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges to both states, affecting low-lying coastal areas. The exact location of landfall may change as the storm progresses, so continuous monitoring is advised.
