The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the center and the National Testing Agency (NTA) in response to a petition seeking the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 results due to allegations of a paper leak. The court expressed concerns about the sanctity of the examination and the need for answers. However, the court clarified that counseling for admissions will continue and will not be stopped.
The petitioners, from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, have raised several concerns regarding the NEET-UG 2024 results. They have claimed discrepancies in the grant of grace marks, pointing out that there is no defined logic for the allocation of these marks. The petitioners have also highlighted statistically impossible marks, such as students scoring the maximum of 720 out of 720. They argue that the reasons for awarding grace marks were not disclosed before the exam, which raises questions about transparency. Additionally, they have pointed out that 67 students from a particular coaching center received full marks, and the provisional answer key released by the NTA was contested by over 13,000 students.
The petitioners have emphasized the dangers of cheating in a medical test, stating that it can lead to a lack of competence and endanger the lives of patients. They argue that cheating undermines the principles of meritocracy and equal opportunities, which are essential for social mobility and fairness in society. The petitioners believe that cheating favors those who can afford leaked exam papers or engage in fraudulent activities, while disadvantaging those who rely on their hard work and merit to succeed.
The Supreme Court has refused to stay the counseling process for admissions, indicating that it will continue as scheduled. The court has listed the matter for consideration on July 8 and has sought a response from the NTA. The court has also taken note of a plea filed before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and will hear it along with the current petition.
