Kolkata doctor malpractice-murder case: Nationwide protests by doctors, medical college chairman resigns
Doctors across the country have protested today over the incident of mistreatment and murder of a trainee female doctor in a government hospital and medical college. Doctors in various hospitals of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata are on hunger strike. They demanded that immediate action should be taken in this incident and protection should be provided to the doctors and paramedical staff working in all the medical colleges and hospitals. They warned that they will not join the work until the investigation of the incident is completed. In the meantime, the chairman of RG Kar Hospital and Medical College in Kolkata, where the incident took place, has resigned. After this incident happened on Thursday night, there is tension in the entire West Bengal including Kolkata. Today, the chairman of the medical college, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, announced his resignation from his post. He said that he should leave his post as political statements are being made in his name. Dr. Ghosh said that he was shocked by the incident, the victim is a junior doctor like her daughter, and the accused should be punished severely. On the other hand, the police have already arrested the accused in the incident. Now he is being interrogated in police remand. The opposition has surrounded the Mamata government over the law and order situation.
While such an incident at a Kolkata hospital has shocked the entire nation, a civic-volunteer has threatened to kill another woman doctor at a hospital in East Vardhaman district of West Bengal. The accused threatened a woman doctor that if the treatment is delayed, the incident like at RG Kar Hospital will be repeated. After the woman doctor complained to the police, the accused was immediately picked up by the police. On the 9th, a 31-year-old junior doctor, a postgraduate medical student, was assaulted and killed at RG Kar Hospital and Medical College in Kolkata. His half-naked, mutilated body was recovered from the seminar hall on 10th morning. On receiving the news, the police seized the body and sent it for autopsy. After it became clear from the autopsy report that he had been misbehaved with, there was panic all over the country, including Kolkata.
