Mootv Odisha : After 24 years, the regional party has lost the opportunity to represent BJD in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament. For the first time since the formation of BJD, the party has to face such a contradiction. An exception has been seen in 2024 when multiple MPs are elected from BJ in every election. In 2014, maximum 20 MPs of the party were elected, in 2024 it reached zero (0). As a regional party, BJD cannot raise its voice in Parliament regarding Odisha’s problems and reasonable demands. Which has now become a big problem for the party.

BJD (Biju Janata Dal) was formed as a regional party in Odisha on December 26, 1997, for the first time in the 1998 general elections. In this election, BJD was more successful than expected. Lok Sabha In the election, BJD won 9 seats, BJP won 7 seats and Congress won 1 seat. BJD president Naveen Patnaik won the Aska Lok Sabha seat in the 1998 elections and became the Minister of Mines and Steel at the Centre. That year, the Mint government at the Center collapsed before the end of its tenure. In 1999, the countrymen faced another general election. In this election, BJD won 10 Lok Sabha seats, BJP won 9 seats and Congress won 2 Lok Sabha seats. In the 2000 Assembly elections, BJP and BJD formed a coalition and contested the elections. Mint had an unexpected success in this. Congress won 26 seats while BJP won 38 seats and BJD won 68 seats. The BJP-BJD alliance won 106 seats and formed the government in the state. The then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dissolved the assembly before the end of the term of the assembly.

In 2004, the BJP-BJD alliance contested the Lok Sabha elections in the state. In this election, BJP got 7 seats, BJD got 11 seats, Congress got 2 seats and Jharkhand Liberation Front (JMM) got one seat. The BJP-BJD alliance formed the government in the state as well. Naveen Patnaik once again took oath as Chief Minister. Both the BJP and the BJD were successful in the elections, but in 2009, the BJD ended their 11-year tenure. Both BJP and BJD contested the elections separately. In this election, the BJD got an extraordinary success. BJD won 108 seats as the single largest party in the Legislative Assembly. Similarly, BJD got 14 seats in the Lok Sabha. While the Congress won 6 seats and the CPI one seat, the BJP could not open its account.

In the 2014 election, BJD made history by winning the maximum number of 20 Lok Sabha seats. BJP was satisfied with one seat. BJD won 117 seats in the assembly elections and formed the government. In the 2019 general election, BJD had an extraordinary success in the general election. The party got 12 seats in the Lok Sabha and 112 seats in the Assembly.

12 BJD MPs managed to get the government’s attention by presenting various demands related to the issue of Odisha as a regional party in the Lok Sabha. BJD also formed the government in the state. BJD leaders hoped that BJD would make history again in 2024 general elections like 2019. As in 2014, many senior leaders of the party predicted that the BJD would win more than 17 Lok Sabha seats with a majority in the 2024 general elections. The results of the 2024 elections have proved wrong all the predictions of various media including party leaders.
